Luis Felipe Arias Giraldo, PhD

Data scientist & Postdoctoral Fellow

Welcome!

I’m Felipe. I’m a data scientist driven by the challenge of asking the right questions of data. I recently started a postdoctoral fellowship at the Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research (IVIA), where my research focuses on applying computational biology to genomic and ecological data to better understand plant pathogens threatening key crops across Spain and the Mediterranean Basin. I am also dedicated to building reproducible workflows that turn complex datasets into practical insights for plant health.

In 2025, I completed my PhD in Plant Protection at the Spanish National Research Council (IAS-CSIC), under the supervision of Dr. Blanca B. Landa and Dr. Juan A. Navas-Cortés, where my research focused on exploring epidemiological and microbial ecology approches to control Verticillium wilt in olive trees. My research explored whether the olive rhizosphere microbiome could serve as an indicator of tree health, and combined public surveillance records with field surveys to model the pathogen’s spatial distribution and ecological niche to understand the ecological factors behind its spread. During this period, I also collaborated on other projects, developing bioinformatics pipelines to work with other pathosystems including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and oomycetes.
